Abstract: The limit equilibrium strip method is currently a method widely used in slope stability analysis, and the General Limit Equilibrium (GLE method) has the most complete theory and the most relaxed conditions. The shear strength and earth pressure of unsaturated soils are greatly affected by the matrix suction. Therefore, when applying the GLE method, the role of matrix suction cannot be ignored. Based on this, the article makes the following improvements to the GLE method: ① the shear strength of the soil adopts the extended Mohr-Comlonb strength criterion; ② the inter-strip force function adopts a constant relationship similar to the strength criterion of the soil. Through the analysis of the calculation example, it can be known that the safety factor obtained by the improved GLE method is greater than that before the improvement. Therefore, the GLE method underestimates the anti-sliding force of the slope, which further illustrates the influence of matrix suction on slope stability is great.

Key words: the General Limit Equilibrium (GLE method), the matrix suction, the inter-strip force function, the safety factor
